Out of Charge, Not Out of Gas: EVs in Philadelphia
An electric car at zero cannot be fixed with a can from the corner. What it needs is a flatbed and a destination chosen before the truck arrives.

Why it goes on a flatbed
Electric motors are connected to the wheels through a reduction gear with no neutral that fully disconnects them on most models. Towing with the drive wheels turning on the road spins the motor, which generates current with nowhere sensible for it to go and can damage the drive unit.
Manufacturers are direct about this. The great majority of owner manuals specify flatbed transport only, and some state explicitly that damage from towing with wheels on the ground is not covered. It is one of the few areas where the guidance is nearly universal across brands.
Dollies are occasionally acceptable on a front-drive electric vehicle where the rear wheels genuinely free-wheel, and the vehicle documentation is the authority rather than habit. When in doubt the flatbed is correct.
Transport mode, and why the car will not roll
Most electric vehicles hold the parking brake electronically and will not release it without power. At zero charge the traction battery is empty but the twelve volt system usually has just enough left to enable a transport or tow mode, which releases the brake and lets the car be winched onto a deck.
Find that mode before the truck arrives if you can. It lives in the vehicle settings menu on most models and the manual describes it. If the twelve volt battery is also flat, the vehicle may need a jump on that circuit first, which sounds strange on an electric car and is exactly what is required.
Tell the dispatcher which vehicle it is when you call. Access points for the twelve volt system, the location of the tow eye and the procedure for transport mode differ enough between manufacturers that knowing the model in advance changes what the driver brings.
Choose the destination before the truck moves
This is the decision people get wrong. A tow to your home is often the worst option, because a standard household outlet adds range at a rate measured in a few miles per hour, and a car delivered at zero on a Friday evening may not be usable again until Sunday.
A fast charger is usually the right destination. It puts meaningful range back in the time it takes to have a coffee, and the vehicle drives away rather than sitting. Check that the charger is working and available before committing, because a tow to a broken charger means paying for a second tow.
Match the connector as well as the location. Philadelphia has a mix of networks and connector standards, and a vehicle delivered to a station it cannot physically use is a wasted trip. If your car needs an adapter, confirm it is in the vehicle rather than at home.
Getting to zero is avoidable, mostly
The range estimate on the dash is a projection based on recent driving, and it is optimistic in exactly the conditions that hurt an electric car. Cold weather reduces usable capacity considerably, and cabin heating draws from the same battery that moves the vehicle.
City driving is kinder to an electric car than highway driving, which reverses the intuition gasoline drivers bring with them. Sustained speed on the expressway consumes far more than stop and go traffic, where regeneration recovers energy on every deceleration.
Treat ten percent as empty rather than as a reserve. Below that the vehicle may reduce power output to protect itself, and a car that cannot maintain speed on a busy road is its own problem.
Hybrids are a separate case
A plug-in hybrid that exhausts its battery keeps running on the engine and does not strand you. What does strand hybrid drivers is the twelve volt battery, which handles the same starting and accessory duties as in any car and fails the same way.
A hybrid that will not wake up and shows no dash lights is usually a twelve volt problem rather than a traction battery problem, and it is often solved at the roadside. Say so when you call, since it changes whether a truck is needed at all.
What we need to know
The make and model, whether the vehicle is fully electric or a plug-in hybrid, whether it will shift out of park, whether transport mode is available and enabled, and where it is going. Access matters too: a car in an underground garage with a low ceiling limits which truck can reach it, and that is worth mentioning at the start rather than on arrival.
